FIRST MONDAYS JANUARY RECAP

BY CARY WALDMAN

First Mondays held its quarterly networking gathering on January 9th at the Palour Pub on 86th street in Manhattan, bringing in the New Year with a lot of cheer.

Over 100 members, old and new, came together to start 2012 with the same vibrant enthusiasm that all of founder Dan Schneider’s events possess.

The atmosphere was electric as friends talked about their holiday fun and travel, and picked each other’s brains on how to continually make their business enterprises thrive and grow.

By far the highlight of the evening was guest speaker Carol Scott, whose combination of wit, humor and charm kept everyone riveted to their seats

Scott, of Long Beach and a former Rockaway Beach resident, had previously spoke at another one of “I Can Still Do That’s” partners, Women Who Lunch, events.

Carol, C.E.O. of ECA World fitness, focused on her “Seven Secrets of Success”, which are streamlined to unlock one’s potential and to help them learn how to avoid the pitfalls that stand between people and their ultimate dreams.

Carol discussed how individuals can drop and conquer all the barriers that get in the way, thus helping them make more money, create more happiness, and subsequently, opportunity.

“She was fantastic, and hilarious,’’ said Anthony Orgera, an Aflac District Coordinator. “I could relate to many of the things she hit on.”

“Carol is second to none,” Dan said. “She is always entertaining and full of wonderful tips. She will have a new book out soon, and we will promote it on our website and amongst our members.”

Dan introduced a new networking arm of his “I Can Still That” organization, which First Mondays is a part of.

Third Thursdays will be hosting its first networking extravaganza on February 16th at the Marriott Residence Inn in Longview, Long Island, and is tentatively slated to meet once a month.

Its format will be the same as First Mondays and its makeup of members will include many of the same crowd, especially the First Monday members who reside in Long Island.

Dan expects to see everyone at the next First Mondays in April.

Recap: First Mondays 10.3.11

First Mondays

Picture 1 of 14

By Cary Waldman

First Monday’s October 3rd get-together at The Parlour on 86th Street in Manhattan featured a little bit of everything — as is always the case — when this high-energy networking group of fun-loving metropolitan New York City professionals gather.

The three-hour extravaganza attracted over 75 members and guests wanting to make new contacts and friends and catch up with old ones. And, of course, to have a great time. The affair featured its customary drink and nosh on appetizers start-up as members and their guests warmed up in customarily fashion. Discussions ranged from business, to family and how each other could enhance their live networking component of the non-profit Foundation (“I Can Still Do That”).

Several attendees talked about their new networking strategies and how its creating more business for their companies and careers, particularly through social networking vehicles such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, YouTube and Internet Emailing. Others yacked about how they have polished their professional skills through seminars and webinars. Others just wanted to catch up on personal matters and unwind after a busy day starting their work week.

This is what First Mondays are all about.

“I have been to a lot networking events sponsored by some of the more popular groups in this city, but none compare to what I get out of our First Monday events,” said Helene Leskin, a real estate broker from Williamsburg in Brooklyn. “The atmosphere is so electric. Our members are so friendly. And our hosts are so gracious.”

The idea of First Mondays arose after the tragic events of 9/11 when New Yorkers from many walks of life became determined to heal and help each other. As a social networking event, First Mondays has been able to help generate a spirit of rejuvenation for one another other and in community support.

Geared to developing inter-generational work force teams, foster “mutual mentor” relationships, provide opportunities for continued adult education, and create new business models and Green Jobs, this past October 3rd event hit on all topics when the party moved to the Parlour’s basement to discuss past, current and future endeavors.

Dan Schneider initiated things by welcoming everyone he already welcomed in his bustling, robust manner when they arrived. Dan then passed on accolades to several members before five “Table Ambassadors” presented a varying array of  subject matter in leading small group conversations. They introduced people to one another, and explained the organization’s mission, goals and programs.

“Tonight has been very different from many of the networking events I go to. This was my first First Monday, I had a great time, and I will be back for more, said Cindy Ellerman, a longtime New York City resident.

LEFTOVERS: Watch Adviser Nicole Johnson once again lead guests in learning how to dance the “Dougie”…Dan discussed how well the First Monday group in Los Angeles was doing and about the possibilities of like organizations forming in other cities, including Philadelphia…Dan also announced that the Women Mentoring Women Program is doing much better than anticipated. For more information on this segment of the group go to the First Mondays’ website.
